Burton is the unincorporated community that our own yard sits inside of, wrapped around Robert Smalls Parkway between Beaufort and Port Royal and bordered by Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to the south. It grew up as a working-class residential and commercial area serving the air station and Beaufort's outskirts, with a mix of older mobile home communities, mid-century ranch neighborhoods, and newer commercial development along Trask Parkway and Parris Island Gateway. Because Robert Smalls Parkway runs directly through it, Burton has become the busiest commercial corridor in the county outside downtown Beaufort itself, filled with auto shops, retail plazas and fast food alongside its residential streets. Given that our yard is right here, Burton is the fastest, easiest area for us to reach, and we often run multiple jobs through it in a single morning.

Robert Smalls Parkway and Trask Parkway carry the bulk of Burton's traffic, with residential streets branching off toward MCAS Beaufort and older neighborhoods tucked behind the commercial strip. We see everything here, from small residential cleanouts and roof tear-offs on older homes to commercial dumpster swaps for the retail plazas along the parkway. Because so many streets in Burton connect directly onto Robert Smalls Parkway, access is usually straightforward, and being this close to our yard means we can often turn a same-day call around within a couple of hours.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in Beaufort County, and that covers the large majority of our Burton deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

If the container has to sit on a public street or right-of-way in Burton, that usually changes. Check with Beaufort County before you book, and expect requirements around reflectors, barricades or overnight lighting. Beaufort County handles matters outside city and town limits. Rules genuinely differ from one municipality to the next around here, so please do not rely on what a neighbour in another town was told.

A few practical things that come up repeatedly in Burton:

• Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature live oaks and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
