Sheldon is a rural historic community in the northern part of Beaufort County, best known as home to the Old Sheldon Church Ruins, the brick shell of a colonial-era church burned twice, once by the British and once by Sherman's troops, that still draws visitors down Old Sheldon Church Road. Beyond the ruins, Sheldon is quiet farmland and wooded rural crossroads country along US-21 and US-17, with scattered homes, small farms and family land rather than dense subdivisions. It sits well north of Beaufort proper, closer to the Combahee River and the ACE Basin than to the coast, and the pace of life and the housing stock both reflect that — older rural homes, working land, and a lot of space between neighbors. We do not run to Sheldon as often as closer-in areas, but we know the roads and are glad to make the trip.

US-21 and US-17 are the main through-roads near Sheldon, with Old Sheldon Church Road and smaller rural lanes branching off to individual farms and homes. Work out here tends to be residential renovation, farm-related cleanup and the occasional storm-debris job after a tropical system moves through the Combahee River basin. Driveways are often long and sometimes unpaved, so we confirm access and ground conditions ahead of time, and because the area is more remote, we generally schedule Sheldon deliveries a little further in advance than in-town jobs.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in Beaufort County, and that covers the large majority of our Sheldon deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

If the container has to sit on a public street or right-of-way in Sheldon, that usually changes. Check with Beaufort County before you book, and expect requirements around reflectors, barricades or overnight lighting. Beaufort County handles matters outside city and town limits. Rules genuinely differ from one municipality to the next around here, so please do not rely on what a neighbour in another town was told.

A few practical things that come up repeatedly in Sheldon:

• Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature live oaks and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
• Hurricane season. June through November is the real seasonal risk here — tropical storms, heavy rain and storm-surge flooding can affect delivery and pickup timing. Tell us if you are working around a storm window and we will plan the schedule accordingly.
• High water table and sandy soil. Much of Beaufort County sits low and close to the marsh. Soft, sandy ground near tidal areas needs boards or plywood under the container more often than a firm inland driveway does.
• Summer heat. Asphalt softens badly on a hot, humid July afternoon. We book morning deliveries where we can and always put boards down.
• Covenants. Newer subdivisions sometimes restrict how long a container can sit visible from the street. Worth a two-minute check.
