Chechessee is a small, largely private community near Okatie, named for the Chechessee River and Chechessee Creek that wind through the area's tidal marsh on their way to the Broad River. Much of the immediate area is organized around a private, gated golf and boating club community with its own internal roads and gatehouse, while a handful of other properties nearby sit on more conventional public roads off the US-278 corridor. Because Beaufort County's fastest growth over the past two decades has concentrated around Bluffton and Okatie, Chechessee has developed a similar character — upscale, low-density, and closely tied to the tidal creek and marsh landscape that gives the community its name. It is one of our longer regular trips, and gated-community jobs here require the same advance gate coordination as our other private-community deliveries.

The private golf and boating club portion of Chechessee is gated, with its own internal roads, so any delivery inside requires advance coordination with the homeowner and gatehouse before our truck can be cleared in, the same as our other gated-community stops. Properties outside the gate, closer to the US-278 corridor, are reached like any standard public road. Work here is mostly upscale residential remodel and new-construction debris, and marsh-front lots occasionally need boards under the container due to sandy, low-lying ground near the tidal creeks.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in Beaufort County, and that covers the large majority of our Chechessee deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

If the container has to sit on a public street or right-of-way in Chechessee, that usually changes. Check with Beaufort County before you book, and expect requirements around reflectors, barricades or overnight lighting. Beaufort County handles matters outside city and town limits. Rules genuinely differ from one municipality to the next around here, so please do not rely on what a neighbour in another town was told.

A few practical things that come up repeatedly in Chechessee:

• Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature live oaks and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
• Hurricane season. June through November is the real seasonal risk here — tropical storms, heavy rain and storm-surge flooding can affect delivery and pickup timing. Tell us if you are working around a storm window and we will plan the schedule accordingly.
• High water table and sandy soil. Much of Beaufort County sits low and close to the marsh. Soft, sandy ground near tidal areas needs boards or plywood under the container more often than a firm inland driveway does.
• Summer heat. Asphalt softens badly on a hot, humid July afternoon. We book morning deliveries where we can and always put boards down.
• Covenants. Newer subdivisions sometimes restrict how long a container can sit visible from the street. Worth a two-minute check.
